Exploring Traditional Tune Collections:
Tune collections such as the Simon Fraser Collection and the Patrick McDonald Collection contain hundreds of lovely and unusual tunes that are relatively unknown in the harp world. Discover how to utilize these and other free collections in your harp journey, as well as online resources like TheSession.org and IMSLP. We will walk through the process of how to simply adapt these tunes to the lever harp, including where to start when adding a left-hand accompaniment, and how to best capture the flavor of each tune when playing and arranging. We will work with several tunes from Stephanie’s new Celtic album, “The Road Home From Skye.”
Untangle Your Music:
Do you ever feel like there are patterns in the music that you haven’t identified yet? Do you sometimes get lost or lose momentum in the middle of a piece? Understanding the broad structure of your music in addition to the details will free you to enjoy playing it! Our discussion will cover ways to study and simplify your music by identifying repetition, knowing where “home” is, and using a pencil while you practice. We will touch briefly on how to create easy chord charts or cheat sheets to aid memorization. Use the skills introduced in this workshop to analyze your way to a more satisfying performance, whether playing for yourself or in front of an audience.
It was a beautiful concert, and a perfect way to enjoy an evening after a hectic workweek!
